Behaviors Caregivers May See in Abused Children

Every child experiences the effects of abuse differently and may exhibit differing signs suggesting a need for additional support.

It is important to remember that existence of any one of more of the signs listed below does not necessarily mean that a child was abused.

  • Nightmares or sleep problems

  • Child seems distracted or distant

  • Changes in eating habits

  • Mood swings

  • Struggles with body image

  • Exhibits adult-like sexual behaviors, knowledge or language

  • Regression (acting younger)

  • Wetting or soiling accidents

  • Self-injury and/or suicide attempts

  • Inadequate personal hygiene

  • Drug and alcohol abuse

  • Sexual promiscuity

  • Depression/Anxiety

  • Fear of intimacy or closeness

  • Drops in academic performance or attendance

  • Overwhelming need for perfection

  • Some children exhibit no signs of abuse

If you feel like your child would benefit from additional support from a mental health counselor or therapist, ask your Family Advocate for an appropriate, trauma-focused referral.
