Abuse
Behaviors Caregivers May See in Abused Children
Every child experiences the effects of abuse differently and may exhibit differing signs suggesting a need for additional support.

It is important to remember that existence of any one of more of the signs listed below does not necessarily mean that a child was abused.

Nightmares or sleep problems 
- 
Child seems distracted or distant 
- 
Changes in eating habits 
- 
Mood swings 
- 
Struggles with body image 
- 
Exhibits adult-like sexual behaviors, knowledge or language 
- 
Regression (acting younger) 
- 
Wetting or soiling accidents 
- 
Self-injury and/or suicide attempts 
- 
Inadequate personal hygiene 
- 
Drug and alcohol abuse 
- 
Sexual promiscuity 
- 
Depression/Anxiety 
- 
Fear of intimacy or closeness 
- 
Drops in academic performance or attendance 
- 
Overwhelming need for perfection 
- 
Some children exhibit no signs of abuse 
If you feel like your child would benefit from additional support from a mental health counselor or therapist, ask your Family Advocate for an appropriate, trauma-focused referral.
